OpenAI launches Astra for Law
Astra for Law launched — a foundation that layers legal-specific search, tools and governance on top of GPT-6 Astra. It offers legal research covering more than 230 million URLs and 99.9% of US precedential case law, a zero-data-retention option, integrations with 26 ecosystem plugins including iManage, Intapp, DeepJudge and Thomson Reuters, and the general availability of ChatGPT for Word. The company claims 54.0% accuracy on Legal Research Bench (a 40% relative improvement over GPT-6 Astra with web search at 38.7%), 24% more reference cases found on case-law queries, and up to 54% more relevant passages retrieved from target opinions. Sullivan & Cromwell, Ropes & Gray, Cooley, Skadden, Wachtell Lipton and Latham & Watkins are design partners, and the API is planned as "gpt-6-astra-law".
Why it matters
The second vertical-industry product after ChatGPT for Financial Services (Sep 10). The pattern of selling domain search and governance layered on a general-purpose model is repeating not quarter by quarter but week by week.
