Why does AI make things up?
At its core, the language model behind an AI chatbot isn't looking facts up when it answers you. It writes by picking, one piece at a time, words that are likely to come next. A likely-sounding sentence isn't always a true one, and when an AI confidently says something false, that's called a hallucination.
Week 41, 2026AIAI-written answerDoes AI really understand what it says?
Nobody has a settled answer yet. The records show that people have disagreed about this for a long time.
Week 41, 2026AIAI-written answerHow did chatbots learn to talk like people?
It didn't happen all at once — it took several steps, one after another. Underneath them all is a simple exercise: look at the text so far and guess what comes next.
Week 41, 2026AIAI-written answerWhy does AI need so many chips and so much electricity?
Training an AI means doing an enormous number of simple multiply-and-add calculations. The chip that is good at doing lots of them at once is the GPU. The AlexNet paper, presented in December 2012, established the combination of GPUs, large amounts of data and deep neural networks, and it is usually taken as the starting point of today's deep learning era.
Week 41, 2026AIAI-written answerIs it OK for AI to learn from other people's art and writing?
There is no simple yes or no yet. The rules differ from country to country, and court decisions are still piling up one case at a time.
