OpenAI announces a redesign of ChatGPT ads

OpenAI announced a redesign of ChatGPT ads — clicking an ad starts a conversation with a labeled "sponsored agent" that lets users explore products before going to the seller's site. Inside the Ads Manager plugin, advertisers create, edit and analyze campaigns in natural language, and existing headlines and descriptions are automatically adapted and translated to fit the context of the conversation. The HubSpot integration launched the same day; the Shopify app launched immediately in the US and from September 23 in other countries. Sponsored agents are in testing with some US advertisers, and no figures were disclosed.

Why it matters

Ads become not banners but "conversation partners". It is the first concrete form of where commercial incentives attach in a conversational interface, and the next step after ChatGPT Ads reached an annualized $1 billion scale (Aug 31, 2026).
