OpenAI releases GPT-Live-1 in the API

GPT-Live-1 API released — a full-duplex voice model that listens and speaks at the same time, doing away with the existing staged structure of STT→LLM→TTS. The company claims about 80% fewer interruptions than turn-based systems and a 30-percentage-point improvement over GPT-Realtime-2.1 on Full Duplex Bench. It delegates complex reasoning to back-end models such as GPT-6 Astra, adjusts tone, speed and conversational style through the system prompt, and supports telephone network integration. The voice layer costs $0.05 per minute.

Why it matters

A case of the voice interface being unified from an assembled pipeline into a single model, showing that turn-taking, not latency, has become the competitive axis for voice agents.
