OpenAI releases the Agents API in public beta

Agents API released in public beta — a cloud agent API in which OpenAI runs the Codex harness as a managed service. A single API call creates an agent by specifying the task, model, tools and execution environment, and it provides context management that carries context across long sessions, tool connections such as MCP, custom functions and web search, and orchestration that breaks complex tasks down and delegates them to parallel subagents. Sandboxes can be OpenAI-hosted or third-party, and it says there is no separate usage fee, with billing only for tokens and tool use.

Why it matters

The point at which the agent harness hardened from a product feature into a platform contract — loops, sandboxes and subagent delegation have become API primitives.
