Anthropic releases Model Hardware Standard (MHS) as a research preview

Released the Model Hardware Standard (MHS) as a research preview — a shared specification for AI agents to operate experimental and manufacturing equipment. Explains that unified drivers, which absorb the differences between instruments, translate between a central orchestrator and the equipment, and that agent harnesses access them through standard protocols such as MCP. The initial participating institutions are Genentech, the Baker and Pinglay labs at the University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon University, HHMI Janelia, QuEra Computing and Tetsuwan Scientific. Equipment makers including Automata, Danaher, Doosan Robotics, MBF Bioscience, QIAGEN, Tecan and Universal Robots support implementation. Plans to open-source it after safety evaluation and the establishment of best practices

Why it matters

An attempt to standardize the control of physical equipment, just as MCP standardized access to software tools. A boundary event that extends agents' reach into lab hardware, with the lead on the standard once again resting with Anthropic
