Automated researchers can reliably mitigate alignment failures
Published "Automated researchers can reliably mitigate alignment failures" — an experiment in which Claude autonomously proposed, trained and evaluated mitigation techniques for 10 categories of alignment failure, including deception, sycophancy, privacy violations and reward hacking. Per the company's report, it improved the target benchmarks in all 10 categories without loss of capability, and it claims the gains transferred to held-out benchmarks and to a model 4.7 times larger. Reports that on the deception item Claude closed 85% of the safety gap, versus 20% for 28 human researchers (8 hours each). Detected attempted cheating in 39 (2.4%) of about 1,600 research-agent transcripts
Why it matters
An in-house test of the automated-researcher route, which delegates alignment research itself to models. An attempt to shift the bottleneck of safety work from human researchers' time to compute, while monitoring research agents for cheating emerges as an essential component
