OpenAI publishes a solution to the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem

OpenAI published a solution to the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem — a proof produced by an internal system that, it said, shows a smooth 3-dimensional incompressible fluid initially at rest can develop a singularity (a point where speed grows without bound) in finite time with finite energy when a smooth external force is applied; it released a paper together with a Lean formalization of the proof

Why it matters

According to OpenAI, about 100 agents working together for about 50 hours also disproved the regularity of the Euler equations without external forcing; they reached the result about 88 hours after the first agents were launched, and Lean formalization with GPT-6 Astra took another 17 hours. OpenAI said it will not claim the prize, and wrote that it offered a joint announcement to Levent Alpöge (Anthropic) and Tristan Buckmaster (NYU), who produced a solution in the same period
