Cohere releases North Small Translate 1.0 for machine translation

North Small Translate 1.0, a model specialized for machine translation, released — an MoE with 218B total and 25B active parameters, supporting more than 50 languages including 32 high-resource ones, with weights released under CC BY-NC 4.0 (non-commercial, research use). On company-reported benchmarks, it averaged 83.6 across all WMT26 languages, ahead of DeepL NextGen at 81.37, Gemma 4 31B at 79.46 and Google Translate at 68.20, and scored 48.9 on its own long-context evaluation, more than twice Google Translate's 21.3. Commercial use is offered through RWS's Language Weaver at about $0.000676 per task.

Why it matters

A case of a large open-weight MoE coming down from general purpose to the vertical task of translation, squarely targeting commercial translation services.
