AI Omnibus Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 enters into force

AI Omnibus Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 enters into force — published in the Official Journal on Jul 24, 2026 and in force on Jul 27, 2026, the third day after publication. Postpones high-risk obligations to Dec 2, 2027 (Annex III) and Aug 2, 2028 (Annex I). Generative AI systems placed on the market before Aug 2, 2026 have until Dec 2, 2026 to meet the Article 50(2) marking obligation; each member state must have a national regulatory sandbox operational by Aug 2, 2027. Adds bans on AI systems generating non-consensual sexual deepfakes and CSAM (applying from Dec 2, 2026)

Why it matters

Moves the high-risk obligations (Annex III) from Aug 2, 2026 to Dec 2, 2027, so citing Aug 2, 2026 for the high-risk obligations is wrong; the Aug 2, 2026 application date of the Article 50 transparency obligations stays unchanged
