OpenAI publishes a framework for reporting model misalignment

Released a framework for reporting model misalignment — establishes the principle of bringing reports forward and disclosing observations promptly, even before their causes have been fully explained or mitigated. It splits cases into three tracks — ready to publish / small-scale investigation / large-scale investigation (slow track) — gives advance notice when third parties are involved, and escalates internal disagreements to the Safety Advisory Group. States that disclosure does not require that harm has occurred or that a broader pattern has been proven, and released 6 inaugural reports at the same time.

Why it matters

A declaration that misalignment will be handled not through after-the-fact papers but through an "incident reporting" system — a form that carries the security industry's practice of vulnerability disclosure over to model behavior.
