Paul Christiano joins the OpenAI Foundation board

Announced that Paul Christiano is joining the OpenAI Foundation board and will take part as a non-voting observer on the Safety and Security Committee of the OpenAI Group PBC board. Christiano is a former head of alignment research at OpenAI (2017–2021) who contributed to foundational RLHF research, and the founder of the Alignment Research Center; he is currently a senior technical advisor evaluating frontier models at NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation. The committee is chaired by Zico Kolter.

Why it matters

A case of a founding figure of alignment research returning to corporate governance by way of a regulator — the point at which the human network of safety oversight entered actual decision-making structures.
