Tools & Agents

  • Sep 18, 2026OpenClaw — OpenClaw made its updates atomic — the existing gateway is kept alive while an update is prepared, and on failure it rolls back to the last working configuration, so there is always an agent left to diagnose problems and self-repair (2026.9.1 → 2026.9.2). The change came from the diagnosis that, with thousands of configuration options, not every combination of user setups can be tested; as its design rationale, OpenClaw noted that developers have a separate coding agent to fix things, but for ordinary users that agent is their only means of automation.
  • Sep 17, 2026Run-Ze Fan et al. (Zoom and others) — An empirical study of coding-agent harness design — it evaluated 176 harness configurations across 4 models. ① The smaller the token budget, the more decisive context management becomes, and its main effect is preventing overflow failures; ② combining rule-based removal with LLM summarization works best, while letting the agent recover removed content brings almost no gain; ③ planning improves accuracy for weak models but mainly cost for strong ones; ④ weak models benefit from predefined tool interfaces, but strong models do better on both performance and efficiency when given only bash (especially on terminal-centric tasks). Trajectory-level analysis explains each mechanism.

  • Sep 18, 2026xAI — Grok Voice Transcribe 2.0 released — xAI claims 2x the accuracy of 1.0 at the same price. Short-utterance WER across 19 languages fell from 20.6% to 6.8%; it led the models tested on telephone audio (customer-support calls); and it ranked #1 for accuracy among 32 streaming models on Artificial Analysis's public leaderboard. Batch transcription costs $0.10 per hour of audio and streaming $0.20, with speaker diarization, timestamps and keywords at no extra cost. It is soon to become the Speech-to-Text API default, 1.0 is to be retired within weeks, and version pinning is available.
  • Sep 17, 2026Taoyong Cui et al. — JEPA-Anything released — a domain-agnostic predictive framework that decomposes the latent target into complementary factors and learns each through a dedicated pathway (OPF). Applied to 7 domains — vision, biology, clinical trajectories, control, molecular dynamics, physical fields and weather — it improved on baselines in all 10 dynamics tasks, cut intervention-prediction error on Interventional Pong by 34.8%, achieved the lowest error at both 1 step and 100 steps on 4 molecular systems, predicted more than 1,000 kinds of clinical events, and recovered the Kepler scaling exponent with a slope of -1.4991.

Safety, Alignment & Interpretability

  • Sep 18, 2026Anthropic, Accenture (Faculty) — Embedded evaluation partnership announced — evaluators from Faculty, Accenture's specialist AI unit, are stationed inside Anthropic's facilities to carry out model evaluations and red-teaming, alignment evaluations and safeguard testing. With employee-equivalent access, they observe model development, monitor deployment decisions and communicate directly with staff. The two companies expect to invest at least $1 billion over the next 5 years in building evaluation capacity, and are also in talks with nonprofit evaluators such as METR. Anthropic stated that responsibility for model safety itself remains with Anthropic. The move follows on from Dario Amodei's "We Must Pace the Frontier".
  • Sep 17, 2026Anthropic — Life Sciences Verification Program (LSVP) launched — a program that relaxes and opens up the biology-related safeguards of Claude (Mythos, Opus, Sonnet) only for vetted life-sciences professionals and organizations. It reviews research credentials, security standards and ethics oversight, and splits use into two tiers: standard use (per team, renewed once a year) and high-risk use (per project, renewed every six months, with life-sciences safeguards fully lifted). Access is tied to the stated use, and real-time blocking gives way to offline anomaly detection across sessions. Dozens of organizations were onboarded in a pilot program, and Anthropic expects hundreds of organizations to register in the first week.
